Lorna Marshall – Jazz. Soul. Heart.
“One of Britain’s Finest Live Jazz and Soul Vocalists” – Songlink Magazine
Lorna Marshall is a celebrated singer and songwriter, renowned for her powerful vocals, heartfelt performances, and deep roots in jazz and soul. Best known for her portrayal of ‘Rafiki’ in the award-winning musical The Lion King, Lorna continues to captivate audiences worldwide with her distinctive voice and authentic storytelling through music.
Born in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, Lorna moved to Britain as a young child, where she was raised in South London. From an early age, she discovered her passion for music, writing songs inspired by her surroundings and experiences. She recalls, “When I was a kid, I was always inventing little songs about my experiences. I would look out of my window and write about nature as I saw it. Along the way, it became clear to me that music is my calling.”
Lorna’s musical journey began with The Bethnal Fellowship Church Choir, where she led the choir in a performance of How Great Thou Art on BBC1’s Songs of Praise. She expanded her craft by joining Community Music, an organization dedicated to bringing music to schools and universities. During a collaborative project between Community Music and the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, her remarkable talent was recognized. As a result, she was invited to teach ‘Search and Reflect’ and improvisational music to pre-examination students at Guildhall. She later pursued formal training in jazz singing and graduated with an A-Level Certificate in Soprano Jazz Singing.
Lorna’s career flourished as she performed at renowned venues, including Ciro’s Pizza Pomodoro in Knightsbridge. She collaborated with Italian dance music producer Fargetta on the track Your Love, and went on to sign a record deal with Polydor as the lead vocalist of the British dance group D.O.P. Their hit single Manifest Your Love was voted Number 1 Tune of the Week in Music Week Magazine.
Her exceptional talent led to performances alongside music legends such as Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, Andy Gibb, Chaka Khan, and Michael Bolton. She also provided backing vocals for iconic artists including Sandie Shaw and Rose Royce. In 2019, Lorna starred as a lead jazz vocalist in The Great Gatsby at the Cannes Film Festival, performing at the prestigious Carlton Hotel with the London Cabaret Club, which later won an award for Best Live Production.
Lorna’s solo performances have drawn acclaim, including her sold-out show Celebrating 73 Years of Aretha Franklin at Zédel’s Crazy Coqs in London’s Piccadilly. She continues to enchant audiences as the principal role of ‘Rafiki’ in The Lion King, showcasing her extraordinary vocal and theatrical abilities.
Recently, Lorna collaborated with Eddie Capone and fellow artists on the 3G Project, releasing the uplifting track Let’s Do It for Love. With new music on the horizon, including her latest single Hold Your Head Up High and the upcoming album Making a Difference, Lorna remains dedicated to sharing her music with the world. Her work is a testament to her belief that “It’s all about creating value, beauty, goodness, and living a happy, fulfilling, and contributive life.”
